How to Detox With Epsom Salt

Detoxing is a good first step towards any weight loss attempt and this is why I have always adviced my clients to go through a 2-3 days detox prior to a weight loss program. Detoxing helps to cleanse the body from toxins and also help get your metabolism geared once you start exercising and eating right.

Epsom salt can aid your digestive system in letting go of the clingy waste products that were forcefully trying to become a part of your body system. But how effective is Epsom salt for detox?
Is it better than other detox options?

The Other Detox Options Overview

Contrary to popular belief, your body can actually detox on its own, but the effectiveness of the God given type of detox is entirely unknown hence the need for a 'proper' detox. For various reasons, people choose different forms and methods of detox. Some use smoothies, a special blend of fruits and protein, some shake off the toxins by dry brushing, acupuncture, or a really thorough massage while others make use of Epsom salt or laxative tea e.g Senna.

Epsom Salt Detox and More

Personally,  I prefer to use a combination of smoothies, massage,  a soak in the tub, a good torrent of sweats through exercise and finally, a 'proper' colon cleanse with Epsom salt which is a natural mineral made up of hydrogen,  sulfur, oxygen and magnesium.

I have been reading about how acupuncture and dry brushing is really effective. I will definitely consider try these.

Detoxing in more ways than one will surely boost the effectiveness of a general body detox but I will be writing more on colon cleanse.

What You Will Need

  • Epsom salt
  • Olive pill
  • Grapefruit

You can take it on its own by desolving in warm water as long as it is in its pure form,  without any coloring or scent but a word of caution, it taste awful!

In a nutshell,  Epsom salt has nutrients which is generally needed for the body and for a really beneficial colon cleanse. It works best for some as a salt bath and yes you can detox with a relaxing, enjoyable soak in the bathtub. How effective this is for a digestive cleanse,  I can't tell but it could work for some.
Backed by ancient medicinal useage and modern scientific research. Epsom salt can;

  • Reduce toxins
  • Help with a flat tummy
  • Rejuvenate the skin when used in a bath
  • Improve serotonin levels and reduce stress hormones
  • Reduce blood clots and blood pressure
  • Relieves constipation
  • Relieve muscle cramps, menstrual cramps and more.

The magnesium and sulfate composite can improve the effect of insulin in the body and this could help with diabetes.

Interested? Here are the steps to an effective detox with Epsom Salt.

Step one: The day before your detox, reduce the consumption of fatty meals,  eat more fruits and drink less liquid apart from water. This you should consume more of. In the morning of the detox, drink water first thing after waking.

Step two: Mix two tablespoons of Epsom salt with a cup of warm water. Squeeze in a the whole lemon or grapefruit and add a cupful or two of olive oil (use the cover of the bottle) to the mixture.

Step three: Mix the mixture really well and drink. Repeat the dosage in the evening before bed. Please note, do not consume any fatty food during your detox. Personally, I live on fruits, whey protein and veggies alone for the three days.

Step four: After the detox, gradually incorporate carbs, then fatty food into your diet.

Warnings and Side Effects

If you are on medication, consult with a physician before doing this detox as there are several medications and treatments that shouldn't be taken with Epsom salt. Pregnant women are not advice to take Epsom salt.

A number of varying side effects have been recorded due to overdose or wrongful dosage and administration of Epsom salt and these include; gas, diarrhea, bloating, stomach cramps, excessive thirst,  weakness of the muscle, drowsiness, headache and hypoventilation.

Always seek the advice of a doctor. Don't take Epsom salt for more than three days in a row. If preferable, detox every six months with it. Health is wealth.
