Acai Berry and Weight loss. Facts to know

There are lots and lots of dietary supplement coming into the market every day and it keeps growing. This might make one to wonder and become a little confused about which product to go for. Lately,the weight loss business have become a multi billion dollar investment and investors are always on the lookout for that next miracle drug or super fruit that can melt the pounds away. Acai berry (pronounced ah sigh EE) is just one of such miracle fruits but, should we trust these claims?
 
 
Personally, I don’t really advise going for supplements but if there is one out there that lives up to the name ‘natural’, I am all for it.

Acai berry, What does it really do?

The first person to popularize this supposed fat burning fruit is Dr Perricone. Then it was further popularized by Oprah and Dr Oz. The major idea is that because it does have antioxidants that can fight free radicals that are disease causing and in the process, slow down the aging process in humans, it was also believed that it could help to fight obesity. Almost like tea, Acai berry is said to;
  • Act as a natural appetite suppressant
  • Cut down toxins and fight free radicals
  • Increase energy
  • Manage and reduce fluid retention
  • Burn calories
  • Cleanse the bowels
But do these claims have any scientific study?
Lots of studies have been made and most of these claims have been confirmed by repeated studies. They are as follows;
Reduces the risk of cancer - Acai berry extracts helps kill leukaemia cells when it is applied directly to them for a little longer than 24 hours according to researchers at the University of Florida. This is because acai has a high concentration of anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid which gives it its black purple colour.
Boost metabolism  A polysaccharide in acai berry called arabinogalactan helps the body fight infections and according to the researchers at Montana state university, it can also help with the asthma and infectious diseases.
Packed with Antioxidants Confirmed by popular researchers and various studies, acai is rich in antioxidants which helps fight free radicals in the body.
Appetite suppressant abilities Yes, acai has fibre and can help you cut down those hunger cravings.
Weight loss capacities I dug far and wide for proof of any scientific backing to this claim and couldnt find any. The weight loss abilities of this fruit is nonexistence. I believe that the dietary companies perpetuating this as a weight loss supplement are just trying to sell us tiny stacks of fibre probably gotten from another source packed full with other fillers and additives. And most of them will tell you to exercise and diet. If their Acai products can help you lose weight, what is the need for the exercise? I it definitely not like tea which help you increase your metabolism when you are exercising so I don't see any weight loss property here.
So in summary, you can get the acai berry fruit and add it to your source of daily fiber or if you prefer the dietary supplement, go get that as well but it should be in its 100% non-additives natural form.
 
Always research deep into a company's before using their products and make sure you start with a small amount first to check if there might be any side effect before increasing dosage.
